MATCHBOX COCKTAIL BAR
MAP GOOGLE MAP (770 N Milwaukee Ave; from 4pm; Blue Line to Chicago) Lawyers, artists and bums all squeeze in for retro cocktails. It’s as small as – you got it – a matchbox, with about 10 barstools; everyone else stands against the back wall. Barkeeps make the drinks from scratch. Favorites include the pisco sour and the ginger gimlet, ladled from an amber vat of homemade ginger-infused vodka.
HAPPY VILLAGE BAR
MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 773-486-1512; www.happyvillagebar.com; 1059 N Wolcott Ave; from 4pm Mon-Fri, from noon Sat & Sun; Blue Line to Division) The sign boasting the ‘happiest place in the east village’ seems like an understatement on a summer evening when a strolling tamale vendor appears on the vine-covered patio here – then it’s the happiest place on Earth. Don’t get too sauced before entering the table-tennis room adjoining the bar; the competition is fierce.
RICHARD’S BAR BAR
MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 312-421-4597; 725 W Grand Ave; from 8am Mon-Fri, from 9am Sat, from noon Sun; Blue Line to Grand) The younger of the two main bartenders in this timeless dive is in his 70s. The bar – with its tall, humming refrigerated coolers for to-go orders and a strange mix of Rat Pack and Saturday Night Fever on the jukebox – feels like something out of a Jim Jarmusch movie.
Hang around long enough and the owner may bring out a huge platter of food for everyone. Otherwise Richard’s fare consists of hard-boiled eggs served in a shot glass.
INNERTOWN PUB BAR
MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 773-235-9795; 1935 W Thomas St; from 3pm; Blue Line to Division) A cigar-smoking moose and a bronze bust of Elvis overlook the crowd of artsy regulars playing pool and drinking cheap at this lovably divey watering hole. Order a Christmas Morning, a delightful shot of hot espresso and chilled Rumplemintz.
OLA’S LIQUOR BAR
MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 773-384-7259; 947 N Damen Ave; from 7am Mon-Sat, from 11am Sun; 50) This classic ‘slashie’ – the term for a bar/liquor store combo, where the bar is stashed in the back room – has hours catering to third-shift locals and the most indomitable night owls. Order the advertised zimne piwo (Polish for ‘cold beer’) and blast some tunes on the juke in the same language.
BEAUTY BAR CLUB
MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 312-226-8828; www.thebeautybar.com/chicago; 1444 W Chicago Ave; from 5pm; Blue Line to Chicago) The owners of the Empty Bottle had a hand in this venue. The interior is an imported and restored late-1960s beauty salon from New Jersey. ‘Martinis and manicures’ are the shtick, and you can get the latter anytime for $10. Genre-spanning DJs spin nightly. If the Beauty Bar sounds familiar, it’s because it’s part of a chain with outposts in several US cities.
FUNKY BUDDHA LOUNGE CLUB
MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 312-666-1695; www.funkybuddha.com; 738 W Grand Ave; closed Mon-Wed; Blue Line to Grand) The Buddha shakes with hip-hop and house music (plus chunks of funk, neosoul and old-school rap). It’s usually a mixed crowd dancing in the room, which is unobnoxiously decorated with antique lighting, mural-covered walls and big ol’ Buddhas.
